Eeeeeee~ I'm so giddy! I'm finally able to get a pet snake, I've been wanting one for years but haven't been able to, but now I can! :D I'd previously done research on some of the species I'm interested in, but now I still feel like I need to read more. Due to the agreement with my parents I've got limitations, and basically I need to find something akin to a Sinaloan Milksnake in size and coloration.

That's all fine and dandy, Sinaloans are beautiful, but I can't seem to find any reputable sellers! u__u I dun want any fancy colorations or anything, just a nice,clean, healthy Sin. A site that looks pretty good is VMS Herp, but they won't get any new ones in stock until July. Now I'm finding myself eyeing an older Nelson's Milksnake at a store that's just a short drive from my house, but admittedly I'm rather picky. .___. The stripes are pretty thick on the Nelson, and in general they tend to be smaller in size. (And you gotta admit, Sinaloan just sounds so much purtier than "Nelson"!)Yeah I know, I'm bad.
If I had the option though, I'd get a ball python or two. They're just so adorable and stubby and ROUND. xD And I hear they're generally very mellow, too. Totally would suit me.

EDIT: H'okay so the situation's changed a bit, I can get a ballie after all! Woo~ I think I'm gonna be getting one of them fellas instead of the Sinny. o3o

Gawd I know I need to take things slowly, research seller's websites and equipment qualities and not make any rush purchases that I could regret, but man, it's hard! Any snake owners out there? I'd love to hear any funny/interesting stories or tips on these guys. :3

RAWR RAWR WANT SNAAAAAAKEEE snaaaake snake snakeeeeokayI'mdone. ;_;

In other news, still trundling along with my last summer course. Compared to my Advanced Med/Surg rotation, this public health stuff is a lot simpler. But it also seems like something I could go into... not totally sure yet though.

I like ball pythons, they've got such adorable faces. Even my brother thought so and he's not as keen on animals as me. Plus it's kinda awesome to walk around with a mini-python, ehe. But you're right to make health a priority over beauty, otherwise it's not a worthwhile investment. I suggest you wait for VMS Herp to get their new snakes, then you'll have the pick of the clutch, a pretty snake, and a healthy animal.

I had some really good luck with a ghost morph corn snake as my 'starter' snake. Wasn't hard to get eating at all... and very well behaved.

My second, an albino Cal King was a power eater... but was very skittish. Poop everywhere when you picked her up. >.<

My two ball pythons I have now are great. My female is a great eater. My male...not so much.

My male ball will actually go off feeding for 4 monthseach year. When he's in the mood to eat again he demands a live mouse at least once before he eats his frozen thaw again... this time he's on his 4th live and still not taking frozen. ;_;

That's just my experiences over the years.... good luck deciding. =3

I've dealt with snakes lots. :3 Best bet is to find a very reputable breeder. Be careful though, a lot of so called 'breeders' really haven't the slightest clue what they're talking about.
Sometimes you can find a good pet store to go through. Petsmart has started selling snakes (i work at one). And just like the breeders, really look at them good. They should be keeping records on a feeding chart that you'll get with the snake. Look for cleanness in the cage and bright eyed snakes, filled out, and no stuck sheds.
PetCo sells too but I don't hear many good things about PetCo anymore.
A lot of local stores will carry snakes as well, but same thing. >>' most don't have a clue what they're talking about.
They're's Kingsnake.com that you can check out for listings of breeders.

My ball python just recently died. They are fat little guys. They are really mellow, and they are very shy. Right now I have a Northern Ribbon Snake and well...Forget it. I will never own another one of RS again. The one I have you can't hold, he's so wild x.x'

Oh sure, don't follow my advice. :P Albiet I don't think "make a noose out of your snake and hang yourself" is good advice.
Also, Sin! Yaaay, sin!

lol, Thanks! I'm gonna try and do as much research and gather up info about these fellas as I can so that hopefully I won't have a traumatic "first-pet" experience! @___@

Yeah, when conditions allow I'm definitely gonna get a bally. I actually just came back from that local herp shop I mentioned earlier, and sad to say it was a very short visit. >_< Just the first glance at the holding tanks with the snakes made me wince. A lot of the tanks seemed really damp, turning the wood shavings at the bottom into mush in many of the aquariums. Many of the snakes didn't look too good either... then I saw an entire shelving unit chock full of various young colubrids in those tiny deli cups with more wet shavings, feces in some, and flies in others. It... wasn't very nice to look at. x.x I would really prefer to buy a snake that I've seen and held in person, but if the rest of my in-store visits are gonna be like this I may as well just stick to the online trade and hope for the best...
